Why Visit the Acropolis of Athens
The Acropolis rises 156 metres above Athens and has been the spiritual heart of the city since the Bronze Age. No trip to Greece is complete without seeing the Parthenon up close.
The Parthenon
The crown jewel of Classical architecture — a temple to Athena built 447–432 BC, considered the finest example of the Doric order ever constructed.
Unmatched Views
360° panoramas over Athens from the Sacred Rock: Lycabettus Hill, Piraeus port, the Saronic Gulf, and on clear days even the island of Aegina.
UNESCO Heritage
Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987. The Acropolis shaped democracy, philosophy, and Western civilization itself.

Complete Guide to Acropolis Tickets (2026)
Everything you need before you buy Acropolis tickets: current prices, skip-the-line options, the combined ticket, free entry days, opening hours, and expert tips — all in one place.
How Much Do Acropolis Tickets Cost in 2026?
The standard adult Acropolis ticket costs €20. This covers full access to the Acropolis hill, including the Parthenon, the Erechtheion and its famous Caryatid porch, the Propylaea gateway, and the Temple of Athena Nike. Children under 18 enter free. EU citizens aged 18–25 pay a reduced rate of €10 with valid ID.
For a full breakdown of all ticket types and discounts, see our Acropolis ticket prices guide.
The Combined Ticket (Best Value for Most Visitors)
The €30 combined ticket covers 7 major archaeological sites and is valid for 5 consecutive days. The sites included are:
- → The Acropolis — the main site — Parthenon, Erechtheion, Propylaea, Temple of Athena Nike
- → Ancient Agora of Athens — where democracy was born; includes the Temple of Hephaestus
- → Roman Agora — Julius Caesar's marketplace, just north of the Ancient Agora
- → Kerameikos — Athens' ancient cemetery, far less visited and genuinely moving
- → Temple of Olympian Zeus — the largest temple in ancient Greece
- → Hadrian's Library — the Roman Emperor's contribution to the city
- → The Lykeion — Aristotle's original school, recently excavated
If you plan to visit even two or three of these sites, the combined ticket pays for itself. Our full guide to the Acropolis combined ticket covers how to use it over multiple days.
Where to Buy Acropolis Tickets
There are three ways to buy: at the gate, via the official government portal, or through our certified booking partner.
Option 1: At the Gate
The ticket booth is open from the site's opening time. In low season (November–March), buying on arrival is fine. In summer (June–September), expect queues of 45–90 minutes at the ticket booth on busy mornings, on top of the queue to actually enter the site.
Option 2: Official Government Portal
The Greek Ministry of Culture's official portal sells standard and combined tickets at the same gate price. It works, but the site can be unreliable during peak periods and offers no guided tour options.
Option 3: Book Online (Recommended) Recommended in summer
GetYourGuide sells skip-the-line tickets with timed entry and guided tour upgrades. You get a mobile ticket that works offline, free cancellation up to 24 hours, and guaranteed entry even when same-day walk-up tickets are sold out.
Book 3–5 days ahead in July and August. Early morning slots (8am–9am) sell out first. See our full guide to buying Acropolis tickets online.
Skip the Line at the Acropolis: Is It Worth It?
In summer: absolutely. In peak months, the dedicated entry lane for pre-booked ticket holders moves three to five times faster than the general ticket queue.
Skip-the-line tickets start from around €25 — just €5 more than the gate price. That €5 buys you 60–90 minutes back in your day. Read our honest verdict on whether skip-the-line is worth it.
Acropolis Opening Hours 2026
The Acropolis is open every day of the year. Hours change by season:

| Peak season | April – October | 8:00 AM | 8:00 PM |
| Off-season | November – March | 8:00 AM | 5:00 PM |
Last entry is 30 minutes before closing. Arriving at 8am opening is the single best thing you can do to avoid crowds. See the full Acropolis opening hours guide including public holiday exceptions.
Free Entry Days at the Acropolis
The Acropolis is free on the first Sunday of every month from November through March. Additional free days include:

- → April 18 — International Day of Monuments and Sites
- → May 18 — International Museums Day

What's Inside: What the Ticket Covers
Your ticket gives access to the entire Acropolis hill — not just the Parthenon. Here's what's inside:
The Parthenon
The Doric marble temple to Athena Parthenos, built 447–432 BC. The columns lean slightly inward — an optical illusion trick that makes them appear perfectly straight.
→ 25 facts about the ParthenonThe Erechtheion & Caryatids
The north-side temple supported by six draped female figures. The originals are in the Acropolis Museum — what you see are replicas.
→ Acropolis Museum guideThe Propylaea
The monumental gateway built 437–432 BC. You pass through it to reach the summit — the scale of the columns immediately sets the tone.
Theatre of Dionysus & Odeon
The birthplace of Western theatre (5th century BC) and a Roman theatre (161 AD) still used for concerts every summer.

First-time visitors consistently say a guide transformed their experience. The Acropolis has minimal on-site interpretation — the mythology, history, and architectural genius behind each structure isn't obvious without context.

Acropolis Museum: Don't Skip It
The Acropolis Museum sits 400 metres from the main entrance and is one of the finest archaeological museums in the world. It holds the original Caryatids (five of six), the Parthenon frieze, thousands of Archaic-period objects, and a glass floor over live excavations.
Cost: €10 adult (reduced €5). Not included in the Acropolis ticket. The top-floor Parthenon Gallery is aligned with the actual Parthenon — visible through floor-to-ceiling windows. Allow 1.5–2 hours.
